Online Marriage And Relationship Counseling

What To Expect From Online Counseling

Work On Your Marriage From Anywhere

Facing relationship obstacles alone can be challenging. Navigating logistics such as location and scheduling may make it difficult for you to focus on your marriage or intimate relationship. New technologies have made couples therapy more convenient so you can get the support you need to help your relationship thrive. I now offer online counseling so you can work on your marriage or relationship from anywhere.

Benefits Of Online Counseling For Marriage And Relationship

Whether you and your partner lead busy lives or you’re in a long-distance relationship, there are many benefits to online relationship and marriage counseling. Benefits include:

  • You and your partner can be in two different locations and call in from the privacy of your home or office.
  • Finding childcare is no longer an issue.
  • Travel, meetings, or other physical limitations are no longer obstacles to working on your relationship.

Of course, the biggest benefit of online counseling is that it can strengthen your relationship and set you up for long-term success.

What Online Counseling Can Help With

Ongoing online counseling sessions can help you strengthen your bond, increase trust, and resolve gridlock situations. Even more complicated issues such as infidelity can be addressed using teletherapy. Working on your relationship will positively affect your immediate and extended family. It can even help with other issues like anxiety, depression, anger, and sexual problems that may impact your relationship.

How Online Counseling Works

Online marriage and relationship therapy is virtually the same as in-office counseling. Our initial session focuses on understanding the cycle you are in and creating strategies to de-escalate via Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). EFT was initially started by Dr. Sue Johnson. It focuses on the idea that there’s a connection between human emotions and primary attachment developed in childhood that manifests itself in adult relationships. Research shows that EFT is highly effective and that the majority of people who use it experience remarkable improvement in their relationships. In addition to EFT, I introduce the Gottman Method, which includes having you and your partner complete an online assessment. The Gottman Relationship Checkup is designed as a tool for clinicians. This research-based assessment tool for therapists helps me understand the strengths and challenges of your relationship and determine a suitable treatment plan.

FAQ

What is online couples counseling and is it as effective as in-person therapy?

Online couples counseling — also known as teletherapy — delivers the same evidence-based clinical work as in-person sessions through a secure video platform, from wherever you and your partner are most comfortable. The short answer to whether it is as effective is yes — and the research supports this consistently. In my practice, I have found that many couples actually open up more readily in their own environment than they do in an office setting, which can accelerate the therapeutic process rather than slow it down. The modalities I use — Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) and the Gottman Method — translate fully and effectively to the online format. What changes is the logistics. What doesn’t change is the depth, the direction, or the quality of the work.

My partner and I are in different locations — can we still do couples therapy together online?

Absolutely — and this is one of the most significant advantages of online counseling for couples. You and your partner can join from two completely separate locations, whether that means different rooms in the same house, different cities, or different states. All that is required is a private space, a reliable internet connection, and a willingness to show up for the relationship. Geographic distance, demanding travel schedules, long commutes, childcare responsibilities, and physical limitations are no longer reasons to put the work off. The session comes to you — wherever you are.

What issues can online marriage and relationship counseling actually address?

Online counseling is effective across the full range of relationship challenges I work with in person. This includes communication breakdown, recurring conflict cycles, emotional distance and disconnection, trust issues, and even complex presentations like infidelity and affair recovery. It can also address the individual issues — anxiety, depression, anger, and sexual difficulties — that frequently surface within and affect the health of a relationship. In my experience, there is very little that in-person therapy can address that online therapy cannot, with the exception of the most acute crisis presentations that require immediate, in-person support. If you are unsure whether your specific situation is suited to online work, a complimentary consultation is the best way to find out.

How does online couples therapy actually work — what happens in a session?

Our initial session focuses on understanding the cycle you and your partner are currently caught in — the patterns of pursuit and withdrawal, escalation and shutdown, that are driving the disconnection — and beginning to create strategies to de-escalate it through Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). EFT, developed by Dr. Sue Johnson, is grounded in attachment theory and has one of the strongest evidence bases of any couples therapy approach, with research showing remarkable improvement for the majority of couples who engage with it seriously. I also integrate the Gottman Method, which includes having you and your partner complete the Gottman Relationship Checkup — a comprehensive, research-based assessment covering friendship, intimacy, conflict, values, trust, finances, and more — so that our work is informed by a detailed picture of your relationship’s specific strengths and challenges from the very beginning.

What session formats do you offer for online marriage counseling — and how do we get started?

I offer regular weekly 50-minute sessions via Zoom, FaceTime, or Google Meet, as well as extended sessions and marathon sessions using the Gottman Method for couples who want to create deeper momentum in a concentrated period of time. During our initial consultation, we will talk through your situation, your goals, and which format makes the most sense for where you are right now. The first step is a complimentary 20-minute consultation — no commitment required, just an honest conversation about whether working together is the right fit. Contact me today to schedule yours and take the first step toward getting your relationship back on track.
