FAQ
What can I expect in my first therapy session with a psychotherapist?
The first session is really a conversation — a chance for me to understand what’s bringing you in and for you to get a feel for whether we’re the right fit. We’ll talk about what you’re navigating, what you’re hoping for, and any relevant history that helps me understand your full picture. There’s no pressure to share more than you’re comfortable with, and you won’t leave with homework or a diagnosis. Most clients tell me they leave the first session feeling lighter just for having said it all out loud.
How long does therapy take? How often should I meet with a psychotherapist?
It depends on what you’re working through and what you’re hoping to accomplish. Some clients come for a few months to navigate a specific challenge — a difficult transition, a relationship issue, a wave of anxiety. Others stay longer to do deeper work around long-standing patterns or trauma. Most people start with weekly sessions, which builds momentum, and we adjust from there as you make progress. I’ll always be honest with you about what I think is realistic, and you’re in control of the timeline.
How do I know if a psychotherapist is right for me — or if I really need it?
You don’t have to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. People come for all kinds of reasons: feeling stuck, navigating a major life change, struggling in relationships, processing something from the past, or just wanting to understand themselves better. If something has been on your mind enough to bring you to this page, that’s usually a sign it’s worth exploring. The first consultation is a low-pressure way to find out without committing to anything.
Is what I share to a psychotherapist really confidential?
Yes. Confidentiality is the foundation of therapy and I take it seriously. What you share with me stays between us, with a few narrow legal exceptions that all licensed therapists are bound by — primarily situations involving imminent risk of harm to yourself or others, or abuse of a child or vulnerable adult. I’ll walk you through all of this in our first session so you know exactly what to expect. For everything else, your privacy is fully protected.
Do you accept insurance, and what does therapy cost?
I’m considered an out-of-network provider, which means I don’t bill insurance directly. However, many PPO plans reimburse a portion of out-of-network therapy costs, and I’m happy to provide a monthly superbill you can submit for reimbursement. I encourage you to call your insurance and ask: “What are my out-of-network outpatient mental health benefits?” I am also partnered with Mentaya so you can check your eligibility for insurance ont my Fees page. Investing in therapy is a meaningful decision — I’m transparent about fees during our consultation call so you can decide what works for you.
